By Brigadier General Peggy C. Combs W hat does it mean to be a professional chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) Soldier? It means being educated, trained, and experienced in our craft. Institutional training and unit experience are two ways to gain that professionalism, but we cannot rely on those methods alone. Our continuing competence as professional CBRN Soldiers also requires self-development, and professional reading is a centerpiece of any self-development program. Professional reading helps add critical detail and greater depth to the information that we learn at institutions and within our units. Beginning with this issue of Army Chemical Review, I will be providing a recommended professional reading list, which will be updated and published in each issue of Army Chemical Review. Topics will span four broad categories: leadership, joint/Army doctrine, the CBRN profession, and history/miscellaneous. The recommendations will be made based on the relevancy, subject interest, and readability of the publications. I encourage you to read all of the recommended works, and I hope that they will prompt you to critically evaluate yourself as a professional and to refect on ways that you can improve. I want your feedback. Please contact Lieutenant Colonel Damon Yourchisin at or (573) 563-8189 to be recognized for your reading efforts and to suggest publications to be considered for subsequent recommended professional reading lists.
